Frequently Asked Questions About Psychotherapy in New York

How Do You Find a Psychotherapist in New York?

Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Therapist

Finding a therapist can seem like a full-time job. From reading tons of profiles to trying to decode what all these types of therapies mean, you feel overwhelmed. It can be hard to know what questions to ask! I’m here to help. Start here for your answers to my most asked questions, and send me an email if you have any questions that aren’t listed here.

Please note that I am currently booked, but all of the wonderful therapists working with me at Meadow Therapy are currently available.

How long do therapy sessions typically last?

Sessions are 45 minutes in length.

What happens during the first therapy session?

We’ll use the first 1-3 sessions to take a thorough history, talk about therapy logistics (like privacy and confidentiality), and set goals for our work together.

How often will I need to come to therapy?

Sessions are one to two times per week, depending on the level of support that you need. I do not offer sessions every other week. Therapy is a commitment that requires sustainable work to create long-term change. In my clinical experience, this is done best in a weekly format.

How long will I need to come to therapy?

Healing takes time. Length of treatment depends on several factors, including your goals for therapy, your life history, how much support you have outside of therapy, and how persistent or intensive your symptoms are. I cannot pinpoint how long we will work together. However, I can say that, in general, my clients have worked with me for several years. This does not mean that you will be in therapy with me for the rest of your life. I want to help you meet your goals, achieve stabilization and feel that you have the tools to go out into the world and try on what you’ve learned in therapy.

How much do sessions cost?

$200 for a 45-minute session.

Does my insurance cover sessions?

If you have out-of-network insurance coverage, you can be reimbursed based on your out-of-network benefits.

How do I seek reimbursement from my insurance company?

I am happy to help with out-of-network claims for your insurance. I will give you a specific form to send to your insurance company so that you can get reimbursed for out-of-network claims. Please call your insurance to determine if your benefits include out-of-network coverage.

Do you have evening and weekend appointments available?

I do not currently have availability on evenings and weekends.

Where do sessions take place?

I am currently offering virtual sessions for anyone in New York or New Jersey. I am offering in-person sessions at my outdoor office in Kingston, NY (near New Paltz, NY). I use HIPAA-compliant and encrypted software for video sessions to ensure your privacy and security during our sessions.

What services do you offer?

I offer trauma therapy, gender & sexuality therapy (including gender-affirming surgery letters), identity-affirming therapy, and outdoor therapy. I also run workshops and events and am happy to speak at your company or organization.

What is your cancellation policy?

Payment of the full session fee is required for sessions canceled without a full 24 hours notice. Scheduling changes can be made on occasion, permitting availability, and you can use the online client portal to request a rescheduled appointment. Cancellations made within 24 hours of your appointment should be made via telephone and email.

What if therapy isn't working?

Let’s talk about it! If you find that we are no longer a good fit, if your financial or life situation changes or if you relocate, or for any other reason you do not want to continue therapy with me, you are under no obligation to stay. You have freedom of choice no matter how short, or long we’ve been working together. I want the opportunity to discuss this with you before ending therapy together to understand what is not working for you and ensure quality care for everyone I work with. I will do my best to refer you to a colleague in any of these cases.

I’m ready to start therapy with you. What do I do next?

I know it can feel like a big step to call a therapist, but I’ll make it easy. We’ll spend 15-minutes on the phone, and I’ll let you know how or if I can help. If I am not the right person, I’ll do my best to get you to the right person.
